Classroom Initiatives

Programming designed for students includes lesson plans that address state and national learning standards across the curricula. There are currently three lesson plans in place, and more are being developed. Our Education Coordinator was invited to present at the first annual Western Southern Tier Council for the Social Studies Conference last fall. With the focus on “local history,” her topic was “Legacy of Laughter: the Cultural and Historical Legacy of Lcuille Ball."  Click below for lesson plans.

Library Exhibit

In the summer of 2007 we initiated a collaborative exhibit at Smith Library at Chautauqua Institution. We were joined in this venture by the Robert H. Jackson Center and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. The title of the display was “Saluting Local Legends.”  Click HERE to see The Chautauquan Daily’s story of the exhibit, as well as a related story about Lucille Ball’s 1930 performance at Chautauqua.

Girl Scouts

We have formed a strong partnership with the Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York. Our education coordinator has developed programming which enables Scouts to earn badges through working with the Lucy-Desi Center. In addition, Scout troops have performed community service in conjunction with the Center.  Click HERE to see a story and pictures about this partnership.

Senior Citizens

The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center has monthly programming with senior citizens at Jamestown, New York’s Lutheran Social Services geriatric care facility. Plans are underway for expanding this service to other local facilities and developing programs that can be implemented across the country.

Children’s Story Hours

The Lucy-Desi Center’s education coordinator led story hours for children at Chautauqua Institution’s Smith Library in the summer of 2007.

Hispanic Outreach

In honor of Desi Arnaz, the Lucy-Desi Center is proud to join with other Jamestown, New York, organizations in celebrating Hispanic heritage with festivities for National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), Three Kings Day in early January, and Cinco de Mayo in early May.
