The mission of the Lucille Ball-Desi
Arnaz Center is to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Lucille Ball and Desi
Arnaz and enrich the world through the healing powers of love and laughter.
Lucie Arnaz noted, “As the children
of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and as president and vice president of the
Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center in our mother’s hometown of Jamestown, New York,
my brother Desi and I searched for some time for a way to explore, extend and
celebrate the global impact that our parents created through their television
show, ‘I Love Lucy’. In our search, we have established several
different ventures to teach and try to understand humor and the power it has
always held to heal the human spirit.”
One of these ventures is Legacy of
Laughter seminars, or LOLs: panel discussions, with audience interaction, that
explore and celebrate the inestimable value of laughter. These are moderated by
Lucie Arnaz, and panelists include those who create or perform comedy, who use
it in their work, or who have been healed by it.
The initial LOL took place in
Jamestown, New York, on the 54th anniversary of the first airing of “I Love
Lucy”. The next was in Los Angeles. Among the panelists to date are child
star Jane Withers, Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, and
award-winning television writer Sam Denoff (The Steve Allen Show, The
Andy Williams Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl).
The most recent LOL – and the first one sponsored by TV Land – was held in
Jamestown on May 26 during Lucy-Desi Days 2007. With the support of TV Land,
plans are underway for two additional LOLs in other parts of the country.
